Only Polar Nights Are Certain

Framed by the polar night, a period of weeks when the sun never rises above the horizon, this project explores the small communities in Finnish Lapland above the Arctic Circle. Known for their reindeer herding and their close relationship to nature, these snow-bound communities today are beset by change: an aging population, an exodus of young people, global warming, and economic hardship.

In an unforgiving environment, the inhabitants of these remote villages, proud of their strong roots, show resilience and hope to maintain their nature-based livelihoods in a place where only the polar night remains unchanged from generation to generation.
